The Feedback Compass™
A Care × Challenge Preference Inventory
Inspired by Kim Scott's Radical Candor framework
Purpose
The Feedback Compass helps people identify their natural tendency when giving corrective or developmental feedback — particularly when the conversation feels uncomfortable.
It measures two independent preferences:
- Relational Care: How naturally you consider the person, relationship, circumstances and emotional impact.
- Direct Challenge: How readily you name the issue, express disagreement and clarify what needs to change.
The instrument measures preference and comfort, not competence, character or intention. Kim Scott's framework combines Care Personally with Challenge Directly. Importantly, the quadrants are intended as a compass for conversations, not permanent labels for people.
Participant Instructions
This is not a test of whether you know how feedback should be given. It explores what you naturally tend to do.
Think about your behaviour during the last six months, especially when:
- Performance was below expectation.
- You disagreed with someone.
- The relationship mattered.
- The other person might react defensively.
- You felt pressure, irritation or uncertainty.
For each pair:
- Choose the statement that is more like your actual first instinct.
- Choose only one response.
- If both sound like you, select the one you do more often.
- If neither sounds exactly like you, select the one that is less unlike you.
- Work quickly. Do not spend more than 20 seconds on an item.
Do not try to identify which response represents the “better manager.” In most pairs, both approaches can be effective depending on context.
